Barry Bumgardner

Founding Partner


Barry is a founding partner of the firm. He is a licensed patent attorney whose practice is focused on on patent litigation and licensing. He holds a degree in electrical engineering from Texas A&M University, and a JD from the University of Texas. He was previously General Counsel at SigmaTel, Inc., and has experience leading world-wide IP enforcement campaigns in the semiconductor space.

Barry is a founding partner of the firm. He has been a licensed patent attorney since 1995 and focuses his practice on patent litigation and licensing.

Immediately prior to joining the firm, Barry was Vice President, General Counsel at SigmaTel, Inc., a publicly traded semiconductor company in Austin, Texas. While at SigmaTel, executed a world-wide IP enforcement campaign against SigmaTel’s primary competitor. This campaign included initiating patent infringement actions in U.S. district courts, the U.S. International Trade Commission, various European countries, and mainland China.

Before joining SigmaTel, Barry was a Director at Freescale Semiconductor and was in charge of the legal team tasked with negotiating royalty-bearing patent cross-licenses with other large semiconductor companies. In this position, he led a group of attorneys and senior technical personnel, and successfully negotiated portfolio-wide patent licenses with several of the world’s top-ten semiconductor manufacturers.

While at Freescale, Barry also managed several patent infringement lawsuits, including lawsuits initiated by Freescale against Micron Technology, ST Microelectronics, and Analog Devices. At both Freescale and SigmaTel, Barry led extensive patent mining and reverse engineering efforts to uncover patents that could be asserted against competing companies.

Barry received his law degree from the University of Texas School of Law in 1995. After graduation, Barry worked at Felsman, Bradley, Gunter & Dillon, L.L.P., a Ft. Worth based patent boutique for two years, and Vinson & Elkins, L.L.P., a large general practice firm, for six years. While at Vinson & Elkins, Barry litigated numerous patent infringement disputes and regularly advised clients on patent and other intellectual property matters.

Barry received his Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from Texas A&M University in 1990. Between undergraduate and law school, Barry was a firmware engineer for a telecommunications company.
